Recycling Metal - Know the Why and How By John Schofield
Every year, there's roughly a million
tons of metal being recycled in the United Kingdom. This is a lucrative
endeavor, and has earned individuals and companies billions in revenues. Aside from the monetary value, you might be wondering why we need to recycle metal. Below are some of the common reasons:
1. It is a cheaper means of metal production. Producing fresh metal from raw materials costs more than simply melting waste metal.
2. It is environmentally friendly, with lesser carbon dioxide emissions and reduced air pollution.
3. It makes use of lesser quantities of water and because of this, it also helps reduce water pollution.
4. It helps
minimize the amount of metal wastes going into landfills.
5. It reduces the use of raw materials such as Nickel, Iron ore, and Alumina, which are needed in manufacturing and producing metals.
To sum it up, metal is recycled because not only is it cost-efficient, it also helps save the environment.
There are two types of metal- ferrous and nonferrous. To find out how these are recycled, read below:
Ferrous Metal
Metal from steel and iron is called ferrous scrap metal, and these can be obtained from car parts, household appliances, and food containers. There was over 4.5 million
tons of scrap metal supplied to UK company called Steelworks in 2005, and about 6 million exported. This type of metal is highly in demand and such demands continue to grow, by about 5% annually.
Nonferrous Metal
You can get scrap nonferrous metal from copper,
aluminum, nickel, titanium, lead, brass, and chromium. There are lesser nonferrous metals available but they are more profitable than the ferrous type. In 2005, about 800,000
tons of it was exported and the demand increases more than 15% annually.
You can also have your DIY metal recycling at home. As one of the most common waste materials in households, metal from food and drink containers can be recycled and the process is not at all complicated.
First, you need to collect the cans. You can gather the ones you have at home, and you can also ask around from family, friends, and
neighbors. Once you have a sizeable amount of metal ready to be recycled, your next step is to segregate them into two: steel and
aluminum.
You can melt steel cans, which will remove slag (impurities). The remaining pure metal will then be made into blocks of steel, which metal companies use to make cans and other containers.
Aluminum cans, on the other hand, are compressed and then melted. Just like steel, it will be made into blocks to produce new metal products.
Well, you
do not necessarily have to do the melting and compressing of these scrap metals and
trash at home. But what you can do is to simply collect them and send them to companies that run a business out of recycling metals. Additionally, there are also government-funded metal recycling drives that you could take part of. In return, you could earn money and help save the environment.
